ROMARICO “EDWIN” BORJA FELIX Obituary

ROMARICO “EDWIN” BORJA FELIX, 82, of ‘Ewa Beach, Hawaii, passed away on May 2, 2020 in Kane’ohe.  He was born in Piddig, Ilocos Norte, Philippines.

He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Plana Ines, beloved children, Mary Ann (Antonio), Melanie, Raymund, Michelle (Harry); adored grandchildren, Maria, LaToya (Brandon), Michael (Kassondra), Haden; cherished great grandchildren, Emmitt and Tristan.

He retired from the United States Navy (USN) in 1981 as a Mess Specialist, after serving honorably for 20 years.  He proudly served on the USS Renville (APA-227), USS Charr (SS328), USS Satyr (ARL23), and USS Kawashiwi (AO146). He received the Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medals and Awards, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy “E” Ribbon, Sea Service Ribbon, and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.

After retiring from the USN, he earned his Certificate of Completion in General Mechanics from New York Technical Institute in Honolulu (1983), Certificate of Completion of the Food Service Dining Room Service Program at Leeward Community College of the University of Hawaii (1986), and Certificate of Achievement in Food Service from the Leeward Community College of the University of Hawaii (1987).  While attending school, he worked as a Chef at The Seafarer Enlisted Club in Barbers Point Naval Air Station, a Five Star Accredited Club.  He received a Certificate of Commendation for his dedicated service.  He also worked at the Schofield Barracks Aviation Brigade, 25th Infantry Division (Light) Mess Hall where he received a Certificate of Achievement for his “consistently superior achievement in dining support”,“without exception, has provided outstanding meals and friendly and courteous service to all soldiers of the Aviation Brigade”, “high quality of food service”, and “measurably contributes to the quality of life within the Aviation Brigade”.  Other employment establishments included the Bravo Zulu Concession at Pearl Harbor and Kentucky Fried Chicken in Waipahu.  He was determined to learn the “colonel’s secret recipe”.  He finally retired (for a second time) in 2008 from Fort Shafter Army Base where he worked as a Chef at The Hale Ikena Banquet and Conference Center.

After his final retirement, he enjoyed traveling to the Philippines, Las Vegas, and Chicago, composing notebooks filled with special recipes, and spending time with his family.

Due to the coronavirus, a private service will be held by invitation only.
